We are interested in applying a comprehensive molecular genetic approach to study pathogenesis of Huntington disease (HD) and Parkinson disease (PD), and to study molecular genetics of Basal Ganglia (BG), the brain region targeted in HD and PD.

In this approach, we first develop robust mouse genetic models of the disease, or mice that carry mutations in genes that are relevant to BG biology, then we will use a comprehensive array of technology to analyze the phenotypes of these models at multiple levels: From genes (molecular biology; microarray; proteomics), cells (cell culture; imaging; pathology), to neuronal circuitry (electrophysiology; conditional genetics); and ultimately behavior. This approach will help to elucidate fundamental mechanisms underlying the normal function of basal ganglia, and how dysfunction of basal ganglia leads to HD and PD.
